Maryland Clean Energy Technology Incubator (CETI)
at bwtech@UMBC

Maryland Clean Energy Technology Incubator@bwtech (CETI) is designed for early-stage companies working with solar power, wind power, geothermal, hydro-power and biofuels, as well as energy management and storage technologies. A joint venture with the Maryland Clean Energy Center, the incubator is the first in
a planned statewide network of clean energy incubators.

Located at bwtech@UMBC, a research and technology community on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), CETI offers companies:

  • 18,000 square feet of office and wet lab space in the Biotechnology Building on the Incubator and Accelerator campus; rates are slightly below market
  • Access to a part-time Entrepreneur-in-Residence and an advisory board composed of experienced researchers and executives in the clean energy sector
  • Opportunities to collaborate with the talented faculty and students of UMBC’s nationally recognized environmental science programs
  • Mentoring and assistance with business planning, grant applications, marketing and management of intellectual property from bwtech@UMBC’s experienced entrepreneurial services team
  • A strategic location along I-95, five minutes from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, 10 minutes from downtown Baltimore and 30 minutes from Washington, D.C.
  • Clean room and shared scientific equipment
  • Access to conference and training facilities in addition to all of the resources on the UMBC campus – core scientific equipment, day care, dining and fitness facilities
  • 24-hour access and free surface parking
  • Flexible leasing terms

CETI was created for entrepreneurs with the vision to create innovative and practical companies that will make an impact on our society’s use of alternative energy sources. Our areas of interest include:

  • Solutions that improve the efficiency of existing generation processes
  • Smart grid technologies and support
  • Electric vehicles and technologies to support their operation
  • CyberSecurity
  • Energy policy

The CETI is located about a mile from the main UMBC campus. Ranked as the #1 up-and-coming national university by U.S. News and World Report America’s Best Colleges Guide, UMBC is a dynamic public research university integrating teaching, research and service to benefit the citizens of Maryland. UMBC faculty attract nearly $180,000 in per-capita research funding. The CETI is a natural fit with UMBC’s strengths in and support of the environmental sciences and engineering. Officials from bwtech@UMBC and the Maryland Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (MIPAR) at UMBC are currently working to establish an Office of Energy Policy to serve as the primary center for energy policy research in Maryland.
