Going beyond traditional business incubation, bwtech@UMBC’s model includes an active, milestone-based approach to business mentoring (SmartTrack) and a personalized fundraising approach that includes access to an extensive network of public and private investment professionals (SmartCap).

SmartTrackSM
Companies that enter into one of bwtech’s incubator programs are expected to participate in the SmartTrack program. Designed to provide guidance and support to entrepreneurs and enable enterprise growth, the SmartTrack program draws on an extensive network of experienced mentors and business service providers across all business sectors. Business services are offered strategically, based on the unique demands of each company, and delivered using a milestone-based approach that allows the entrepreneur to maintain focus and plan for future growth. Services offered include business planning, finance, accounting, legal, and marketing/PR. Most services are offered either pro bono or at a reduced rate. Components of the SmartTrack program:

  • review a company’s business plan
  • establish a business advisory board
  • identify business deficiencies
  • create a sustainable financial model
  • set company milestones
  • evaluate progress
