Company Profile: StormCenter Communications
“Our mandate is to increase the environmental IQ of America,” says Dave Jones, CEO of StormCenter Communications, a new resident of the Incubator and Accelerator. StormCenter is currently engaged in research projects with NASA and NOAA to improve the communication of weather and climate change data in order to enhance preparation for and responses to major storms. The company is developing the Envirocast® Vision™ Touchtable (EVTT), a potential visualization and collaboration tool for the National Weather Service and FEMA that will enable scientists to share information on storm data and make decisions on where to position response crews before storms hit. StormCenter is developing the EVTT as a prototype decision support tool for The Gulf of Mexico Alliance (governors of all Gulf Coast states) and is working with the state of Texas as a model for how the rest of the Gulf Coast States can be more prepared for weather and climate change impacts to the region.

- Plant Sensory Systems has been awarded two SBIR Phase II awards: one from the National Science Foundation to develop a technology that reduces the amount of nitrogen fertilizer and water that a plant requires in order to produce normal yields; and one from the Department of Energy to develop a technology that increases seed oil in oilseed plants. Congratulations to Plant Sensory Systems’ owners, Frank and Kathy Turano, on their company’s latest milestones!
- UMBC has been awarded a grant by the Maryland Higher Education Commission to support BRAC-related education and training. The award will enable UMBC Training Centers to establish The Center for Cybersecurity Training and to develop and expand programs that support the cyber mission of the region’s government agencies and contractor community. The Center will develop15 noncredit courses that address critical cybersecurity workforce needs. It is anticipated that between 75 and 150 students will participate in the initial offerings of these courses, with the Center eventually training an additional 720 students annually. The project will help UMBC develop a regional workforce with the qualifications and skills to support local cybersecurity needs as well as the significant national cybersecurity initiatives within our state.
