Undergraduate Degree Programs
UMBC offers 48 majors, 26 minors, and 18 certificate programs in the physical and biological sciences, social and behavioral sciences, engineering, mathematics, information technology, humanities and visual and performing arts. New degree programs include game development, business technology administration and media and communications studies.

UMBC's Graduate School offers 35 master's degree programs, 24 doctoral degree programs and 22 graduate certificate programs. UMBC enrolls nearly 3,000 information technology related majors and produces almost 40 percent of Maryland 's bachelor's degrees in Information Technology annually. UMBC has experienced substantial growth in research and training contracts and
grants — from $13.9M in FY-93 to $85.5M in FY-02. Funding agencies include:

Optical Fiber Communications Laboratory
UMBC's Optical Fiber Communications Laboratory is studying the next generation
of the Internet, and novel ways to increase, improve and manage skyrocketing
flow of information traffic.

UMBC Training Centers offers high quality, affordable training and certification
to individuals and organizations in the Baltimore region. Through its strategic
alliance with UMBC, Training Centers draws on university faculty and industry
practitioners to provide state-of-the-art coursework in information technology,
engineering, biotechnology, professional development and buisnmess and allied
health. Training Centers also provides flexible, custom training for business,
government and the nonprofit sectors through its Contract Training initiatives.
Its Computer Certification Training Center, an operating division of UMBC Training
Centers LLC, represents the University's most ambitious effort to date to dramatically

The Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship offers non-credit courses for entrepreneurs
through its SMARTbasics and SMARTaccelerator programs. The SMARTbasics Program, "Business Essentials for Techpreneurs," was jointly offered by UMBC
and the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA). The program was
specifically designed to initiate techpreneurs into the business of doing business.
Offered in the Fall of 2001, SMARTbasics provided an in-depth overview of effective
business practices including planning, marketing, human resources and finance
for high-tech entrepreneurs. The program was offered to CEOs and senior staff
