UMBC GRAD STUDENT WINS FIRST-EVER GROSVENOR GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP

BALTIMORE COUNTY , MD , March 30, 2004 — University of Maryland , Baltimore County (UMBC) graduate student Patrick Ymele-Leki is the first-ever recipient of the Grosvenor Graduate Fellowship. This $25,000 award allows Ymele-Leki to concentrate fully on his Ph.D. research project, which focuses on one of the most common causes of hospital- and community-acquired infections. Results of his research, he said, “may lead to the development of novel therapeutic methods to prevent chronic infections due to that organism.”

“The Grosvenor Graduate Fellowship at UMBC is a concrete example of Grosvenor's worldwide commitment to educational advancement and improvement of the human condition,” said Andrew Galbraith, Senior Vice President of Grosvenor. “We are excited about the potential of Mr. Ymele-Leki's research to have a real impact on infectious disease control. Promising Maryland science students like Mr. Ymele-Leki can contribute greatly to the development of Maryland's growing biotech industry.”

Mr. Ymele-Leki, a native of France, received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering at UMBC, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 average and achieving Dean's List status each semester. He is now a first-year graduate student in UMBC's Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Department. His Ph.D. research project focuses on Staphylococcus aereus , which is known to colonize surfaces in organized biofilm communities that can cause chronic or persistent infections. Mr. Ymele-Leki will analyze the structure, growth and maturation of these biofilms.

In addition to his academic work, Mr. Ymele-Leki has served as a research assistant at UMBC and Howard University, completed two internships at the Smithsonian Institution, and co-authored an article in Biotechnology and Bioengineering . He is the recipient of numerous awards including an American Institute of Chemical Engineers Award, USAA National Award, and the R.B. Woodward Memorial Organic Chemistry Award.

Grosvenor, in collaboration with UMBC, is developing the 41-acre bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park adjacent to the UMBC campus. bwtech@UMBC has a total development capacity of up to 330,000 square feet of office and laboratory space. The park will ultimately comprise five new state-of-the-art buildings occupied by research

and technology firms. These firms have access to university expertise, students, technology, programs, and facilities. One building is currently occupied by RWD Technologies, and a second building is under construction for delivery later this year. The new building is designed for either office or wet lab use. Potential tenants may include graduates of UMBC's technology incubator program, techcenter@UMBC .
