RWD Executives, Baltimore Area Dignitaries, and Friends Honor Lifetime Achievements of Dr. Robert W. Deutsch

Founder and Chairman of RWD Technologies is Honored for a Lifetime of Achievement in Academics, Business, and Philanthropy

BALTIMORE, MD – July 22, 2004 – RWD Technologies, Inc., a company that specializes in products and consulting services that support training and organizational performance, announced that its Corporate Executive Council hosted a dinner Wednesday, July 21 at Grey Rock Mansion in Owings Mills , Md. , to honor the company's founder and Chairman, Dr. Robert W. Deutsch. The attendees recognized Dr. Deutsch for his achievements in academics, philanthropy, and business, and his role in founding two successful companies: General Physics Corporation and RWD Technologies, Inc. Although no longer the CEO of RWD, Dr. Deutsch remains Chairman of the Board and serves as director of RWD's Applied Technology Laboratory, where he oversees new product development.

More than 60 people attended the dinner including members of RWD's executive management and their spouses; Dr. Deutsch's wife Florence and their children David Deutsch and Jane Brown; and local dignitaries, including James P. Clements, vice president, economic and community outreach, Towson University; Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president, University of Maryland Baltimore County; and Robert L. Bogomolny, president, University of Baltimore.

Recently appointed president and CEO of RWD Technologies, Laurens “Mac” MacLure, Jr., served as master of ceremonies. MacLure said, “When you reflect on Dr. Deutsch's lifetime of achievements in academics and business, it almost boggles the mind. Among many other things, Dr. Deutsch has founded two different companies that have employed thousands of people around the world and has helped many others achieve both personal and professional enrichment. Dr. Deutsch really embodies the principle that work should be one part of a well-rounded life.”

Born in 1924 in Far Rockaway, New York , Robert W. Deutsch grew up with a strong interest in math, science, and sports. In 1941, he entered Queens College with a major in engineering. After two years at Queens College , in the midst of WW II, Deutsch answered his country's call to duty and enlisted in the U.S. Army. As part of the Army's Specialized Training Program, Deutsch was sent to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study electrical engineering. Later, the Army sent Deutsch to Europe , where he assisted in communications between the United States and the French armies.

After completing his military service in 1946, Deutsch re-enrolled at MIT, where he began studying physics and played basketball for the MIT team. While working at a summer job in Pennsylvania , Deutsch met Florence Kadish, who later became his wife.

In 1946, Deutsch graduated from MIT with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and attended graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley , where he earned a Doctorate in high-energy physics in 1953. While at Berkeley , Robert and Florence had their first child, Jane. After graduate school, Dr. Deutsch began working at the General Electric Knolls Atomic Laboratory in Schenectady , New York , where he was engaged in the design and operation of nuclear reactors used in submarines. That same year marked two other notable events: Robert and Florence had their second child, David. And Dr. Deutsch took up golf, a hobby that remains one of his passions to this day.

In 1957, Dr. Deutsch left General Electric and began working for General Nuclear Engineering Company in Clearwater , Fla. , where he learned what it takes to run a successful consulting business. When the company was acquired four years later, Dr. Deutsch joined Martin Marietta in Baltimore as a physics consultant on aerospace projects. In 1962, Dr. Deutsch fulfilled a life-long dream to teach by accepting a position as professor of Nuclear Engineering at Catholic University in Washington , D.C. , where he later served as Chairman of the Nuclear Engineering Department. To supplement his teaching salary, Dr. Deutsch also served as a consultant to companies that provided services to nuclear power plants.

In 1965, Dr. Deutsch established his first company, General Physics Corporation, a company that trained operators of nuclear plants. Within two decades, General Physics grew to more than 1,700 employees and over $115 million in annual sales. In 1982, he took the company public, and in 1987 he sold his shares and left the company.

At age 63, when he could have retired in comfort, Dr. Deutsch established his second company, RWD Technologies, Inc., which is focused on training workers to use advanced technologies that are becoming common in every business. Based in Baltimore , Md. and with employees in 18 offices in the United States , the United Kingdom , Germany , Belgium , Japan , Australia , and Canada , RWD continues to serve the needs of Fortune 500 and major global corporations. RWD's training and performance optimization solutions are used in more than 20 industries including finance, pharmaceutical, chemical, petrochemical, manufacturing, automotive, rail, telecommunications, medical, and consumer products. Dr. Deutsch took RWD public in 1997, and in 2003 bought back all of the outstanding stock to take the company private again to enable it to focus on its core mission.

In 1992, Dr. Deutsch founded the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation , dedicated to providing multi-year support to technology programs in institutions of higher education in Maryland . To date, the Foundation has distributed more than $3,000,000 in grants to the University of Baltimore , University of Maryland College Park , Towson University , UMBC and Goucher College . In addition to the Foundation, Dr. Deutsch and his family have contributed generously to a variety of causes and charitable organizations in the Baltimore area.
