About
UMBC
- The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is an honors University
in Maryland with a focus on academic excellence and a campus-wide spirit of
entrepreneurship. UMBC has an enrollment of over 11,500 undergraduate and
graduate students.
- UMBC offers 37 majors and 32 minors or certificate programs in the physical
and biological sciences, social and behavioral sciences, engineering, mathematics,
information technology, humanities and visual and performing arts. New degree programs
include environmental science, financialeconomics and a B.F.A. in acting.
- UMBC's Graduate School offers 27 master's degree programs, 21 doctoral
degree programs and seven graduate certificate programs. Programs are offered
in education, engineering, imaging and digital arts, information technology,
life sciences, psychology, public policy and a host of other areas of interest.
A new gerontology Ph.D. program is one of only six in the United States.
- UMBC currently enrolls nearly 3,000 information technology related majors
and produces almost 40 percent of Maryland's bachelor's degrees in Information
Technology annually. UMBC is consistently ranked among the top five research
universities nationally in production of bachelor's degrees in Information Technology.
- UMBC is ranked in the top tier of U.S. research universities by the
Carnegie Foundation.

Research
- UMBC has experienced substantial growth in research and training contracts and
grants — from $13.9M in FY-93 to $85.5M in FY-02. Funding agencies include: NASA,
the FDA, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
- UMBC's Optical Fiber Communications Laboratory is studying the next generation of
the Internet, and novel ways to increase, improve and manage skyrocketing flow of
information traffic.
- UMBC is also a connection point for Internet 2, the high-speed fiber optic network
that enables companies and universities in the Baltimore-Washington tech corridor to
experiment with the latest networking technologies.
- UMBC's Institute for Global Electronic Commerce (IGEC) provides cutting edge research
and practical solutions to issues related to electronic commerce. The Institute's
multi-disciplinary and international curriculum trains students, industry and government
in the area of electronic commerce, while serving as an incubator for virtual companies.
- UMBC is the only Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at a Maryland
public university.

- UMBC consistently ranks among the nation’s top research universities in production of
computer science, chemistry and biochemistry degrees.
- The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology ranks UMBC 5th nationally
in the number of undergraduate degrees awarded in chemistry and biochemistry.
- Each year, The Shriver Center places over 700 UMBC students in internships,
cooperative education experiences and service-learning environments in over 500
public and private organizations in the Baltimore/Washington area and abroad.

- The Center for Women and Information Technology (CWIT) at UMBC seeks to address women's
interests in IT. The center places female undergraduate and graduate students in job-related
IT internships in the public and private sectors and serves as a focal point for corporate

- UMBC's Division of Professional Education and Training (DPET) programs promote
lifelong learning through credit and non-credit courses offered on-campus and
throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. DPET takes the resources of a recognized public
university to the Baltimore community and beyond, and continues to grow in size and
prominence by meeting the needs of busy adults. Flexible scheduling, convenient
classes and specialized instruction appropriate for adult learners are hallmarks
of the division. By collaborating with campus academic departments, outside

- The UMBC Computer Certification Training Center, an operating division of UMBC
Training Centers LLC, represents the University's most ambitious effort to date to
dramatically impact the technical worker shortage. Programs addressing the most
popular and marketable industry-standard credentials have resulted in a major influx
of new and upgraded technical employment candidates for the local economy. Offerings
include: CompTIA Certifications (A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications), Certified
Internet Webmaster (CIW), Cisco Certification (CCNA), Microsoft Certifications
Programmer, Oracle Certified Professional, Discreet Authorized Game Development,
Section 508 Website Accessibility, HIPAA Compliance, Wireless Technologies, online

- The Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship offers non-credit
courses for entrepreneurs through its SMARTbasics and SMARTaccelerator programs. The
SMARTbasics Program, "Business Essentials for Techpreneurs," was jointly offered by UMBC
and the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA). The program was specifically
designed to initiate techpreneurs into the business of doing business. Offered in the Fall
of 2001, SMARTbasics provided an in-depth overview of effective business practices
including planning, marketing, human resources and finance for high-tech entrepreneurs.

- techcenter@UMBC offers a dynamic, fully-equipped facility for start-up and emerging
companies. The complex is a magnet for high-technology business development. Its
specialized environment and services provide businesses with a competitive edge.
The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, the Baltimore County
Department of Economic Development, the Greater Baltimore Alliance, the Maryland
Technology Development Corporation and area foundations and corporations work with
the tech center to attract and retain high-quality companies by facilitating access
to capital, and providing other business support services. techcenter@UMBC also
promotes strategic alliances among tenants and connections between tenants, UMBC
faculty and external companies in the region.
