Incubator and Accelerator:
bwtech@UMBC has office and lab space available at the Incubator. The various office and lab suites are specifically designed for incubator and accelerator technology companies. Some of the space available includes:
Main Building:
• 2nd floor, 5 offices comprising 800 square feet
• 2nd floor, office suite consisting of 9 executive offices and kitchen totaling 2,000 square feet
• 3rd floor, office suite totaling 1,800 square feet (former SCIF space).
• 4th floor, 8 laboratories totaling 5,000 square feet and 1,000 square feet of office space.
• 4th floor, 2,500 square foot executive office suite
Biotechnology Building:
• 1st floor, 8,000 square feet consisting of 7 offices, 5 laboratories, conference room, reception area, and restrooms
• 2nd floor, 4,000 square feet consisting of 8 offices, 5 laboratories, and restrooms

StartRight! Women's Business Plan Competition
Rockville Economic Development, Inc. (REDI) will be holding their 6th annual StartRight! Women's Business Plan Competition. The contest is open to Maryland, District of Columbia and Virginia businesses that are at least 51% women-owned, and have been in operation for two years or less. Eligible entrants could win up to a $10,000 cash grand prize. To participate in the StartRight! Women's Business Plan Competition applicants must submit an executive summary and $25 entry fee to REDI by March 25, 2009.

RMF Engineering Moves Into New Headquarters
, a firm with expertise in mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, infrastructure and aquacultural engineering, has moved into its new headquarters at bwtech@UMBC. The firm brings approximately 120 employees to it's 28,000 square foot location on the third floor of 5520 Research Park Drive, The company has several other offices around the country. RMF has already hired UMBC students as interns, and has placed a number of graduates in permanent full-time positions. Welcome RMF!
Incubator Welcomes New Companies
The bwtech@UMBC Incubator welcomed six new companies recently. , PsychNostics, and moved into the Incubator during November, Columbia Biosystems joined the program in December, and Science Systems and Applications, Inc. moved into the Incubator in January. A warm welcome to all!
Blue Wave Semiconductors Receives SBIR Grant
, a resident of bwtech@UMBC's Incubator, has received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Science Foundation. The $478,000 grant, which begins this month, will help the company develop nanomaterials for commercial and national security applications.

Two companies located at bwtech@UMBC, Next Breath, LLC, and Solvern Innovations, have been selected by Baltimore's SmartCEO magazine for this years Future 50 companies. Companies are chosen based on their growth in staffing and revenue. They were honored at an awards ceremony on January 8th.
Columbia Biosystems Receives MIPS Grant
The company received $149,000 to develop a novel diagnostic to rapidly detect antibiotic-resistant nosocomial infections, such as pseudomonas aeruginosa. Congratulations!
Mid-Atlantic Venture Deals Slowed, but Optimism Remains
A new survey by the McLean-based Mid-Atlantic Venture Association (MAVA) shows that are investors continue to remain optimistic. Just 64% of respondents said that they closed at least one deal during the quarter, down from 89% the prior year, with roughly the same number expecting to close at least one deal this quarter. The mood, however, remains upbeat, with investors anticipating that government stimulus programs will have a positive effect on the region, particularly in the clean tech and alternative energy sectors. New Baltimore Angels Network to Give Tech Start-Ups a Boost
The Baltimore Angels Network, a new angel investment group led by local software executive David Troy, said that it is accepting applications for its initial round of investments. Troy, who owns Baltimore-based Roundhouse Technologies, said the group so far has received about 10 business plans, each seeking anywhere from $25,000 to more than $1 million. The deadline to apply is Feb. 10, with the group's first meeting scheduled for Feb. 24.
